How to check the starter?

March 20, 2021

In a car, the starter is responsible for starting the engine. If this device fails, it will be very difficult to start the engine. But usually this does not happen instantly, but gradually, so that the owner of the car has the opportunity to identify the fault. It is only necessary to figure out how to check the starter with the simplest, available in every home means or multimeter. In some cases, it is possible to check the performance of the motor of the device, even without removing it from the car, and using a charged battery. If everything in your car, including the starter, is so outdated that repairs are not feasible, recycle the car: https://scrapmycarnear.me.

When to check the starter

As a rule, the fact that at least a check is required can be understood by the presence of noticeable noise during the operation of this device. By itself, such noise can indicate:

serious wear and tear on individual parts of the device,
poorly screwed motor mounts,
violation of the integrity of the housing,
presence of some mechanical damages.
Other signs of malfunction may also appear. For example, if there is no click of the retractor relay, then it does not work due to the fact that the battery failed or oxidation of the terminals occurred. There are other signs, but it is not so easy to determine them.

Checking the torque capacity of the starterĀ

In order to find out whether this device is able to extend the pinion and untwist it, you can use the battery. To conduct the test, the parts are fixed, the “minus” terminal is connected to the body, and the “plus” – to the upper terminal of the relay. If the device is functioning properly, the motor will crank the pinion.

How to check the retractor relay

Most often, each of the nodes of the device is checked separately. For example, assess the ability to retract and extend the pinion. To do this, the “plus” terminal of the battery is connected to the retracting relay, as described above, and the negative terminal is connected to the body of the device. The gear should extend with a characteristic click. If this does not happen, then either the relay contacts or the starter winding are burned out.

Features of checking the brushes

There are two ways to assess their function. The first is very simple. For this you need a 12 volt lamp. One of its leads is connected to the brush holder, the other is connected to the housing. If the bulb lights up, then the brushes will have to be replaced, because this indicates a problem with the protection.

The second way involves the use of a multimeter. But it will be necessary to disassemble the starter, remove the brush assembly, including in order to conduct a visual inspection. At the same time check the condition of not only the brushes, but also the winding and armature, as well as bushings. All these parts are important, because due to broken bushings the armature is skewed, the wear of the brushes is uneven. And with that, the risk of shorting increases.

What to do with the winding

To do this, use either a flaw detector or a light bulb, as described above, since not everyone has such a device at their disposal. Only the lamp in this case take up to 100 W and make its serial connections between the stator housing and the winding. To do this, one wire is connected to the output of the winding, and the second is connected to the housing. If a light bulb lights up somewhere, it means that there is a breakdown somewhere.

How to test the bendix

To diagnose this part of the device, the body of the overrunning clutch is clamped in a vise. To do this, use some soft enough gasket so as not to spoil the part. Tried to twist the locking rod, and it should rotate only in one direction. Inspect the pinion visually.
